Heart Health Month

February is Heart Health Month and Pumper Car is proud to be working along with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to raise awareness about the childhood obesity epidemic in our country. "Childhood obesity is a national epidemic. Nearly 1 out of 3 children ages (2-19) in the United States is overweight or obese." —www.healthiergeneration.org

What Is the ESSA?

"In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replaced No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The Every Student Succeeds Act is a real game changer in that it sets a new framework for elementary and secondary education, eliminating “core- subjects,” and shifting to a “well-rounded education.” Unfortunately, NCLB led to funding and program cuts for health and physical education – subjects just as important as math and reading – due to the emphasis on student performance and standardized testing. 18 subjects are included in the definition of a well-rounded education, including health and physical education. So what does this mean for health and PE? Being included the definition of a “well-rounded” education, health and PE are now eligible for federal education funding. School districts will have the ability to access funds for health and PE for low-income schools, professional development for teachers, student support and academic enrichment grants, and after school and summer programs." —American Heart Association American Kids Move With Heart #ORKidsMoveWithHeart
